First to locate in the Township in 1991, was Cambria CoGen Company now owned by Northern Star Generation, located on the south eastern end of Cambria Township on Rubisch Road. A winner of the 1992 Powerplant award, POWER magazine cited the Cambria CoGen facility for its operational and environmental performance. Cambria Cogen exports approximately 85 megawatts of electricity to Pennsylvania Electric Company (PENELEC) under a 20 year contract. The plant also supplies low-pressure steam to Laurel Crest Manor, a local nursing home. For more information please visit their website at www.northernstargeneration.com/cambria.html
Second to our area is the Ebensburg Power Company located along the New Germany Road. This plant began commercial operation in May 1991. The boiler supplies steam to the turbine generator and uses a limestone injection system for controlling emissions. Steam extracted from the turbine is supplied to the Ebensburg Center, a residence facility, for heating . To help improve the local environment, waste coal removal and reclamation operations are also being performed by Ebensburg Power Company. The facility’s fuel is bituminous waste coal (gob)-a refuse material produced from past underground coal mining operations, which is located near the village of Revloc. The most recent of co-generation plants built in 1992, is the Colver Power Plant, located along Snake Road, just north of Colver. The 103 .5 mw facility has a 25 year power sales agreement with the Pennsylvania Electric company (PENELEC). The 25 year supply of coal waste comes from several sources in the surrounding areas, including the Maple Coal Company site adjacent to the plant. Unique to this project is a crusher/dryer building where the fuel is consistently sized and dried by two 100% crushers and a fuel dryer, which can be heated with steam or propane. Water is supplied to the region from the Vetera Dam and Colver Reservoir. Working with the Colver Water Authority, the Colver Power Plant implemented a plan to construct a new dam and reservoir and pay for it with water use fees from the plants operating cash flow.
